Project title: Physiological, morphological and biomechanical requirements of the musculo-skeletal system of the lower leg for top sprinters and endurance runners
Both endurance and sprint running at world-class level is absolutely dominated by athletes of black African ancestry, respectively from East-Africa and West-Africa. It is hypothesized that in the course of evolution, these ethnic groups have developed a specialized musculoskeletal apparatus, which currently helps explain their staggering hegemony in the world of track-and-field. Speed and stamina put competing demands on the design of our locomotor system and several traits of the lower leg are antagonistic pairs with respect to sprinting vs. endurance running. This project aims to investigate the physiological and functional anatomical characteristics of the lower leg musculo-skeletal system that promote excellence in either sprinting or endurance running.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a MSc (or equivalent degree) preferably in Physical Education/ Movement Sciences, and with a strong interest in the exercise physiology and biomechanics of running. Research activities will include NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy and imaging analysis, exercise testing, motion analysis, ultrasonography, etc. and the study subjects are (elite) athletes. A background in track-and-field is an advantage. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Candidates should be able to work independently and in a team.

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time Ph.D. position for four years in the research project, which is funded by the Research Program of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies and will enroll in the Doctoral School Program of Ghent University. The candidate shall devote his or her time primarily to their own research studies.

The research will be carried out at the Department of Movement and Sport Sciences and the Department of Radiology at Ghent University, but the successful applicant will also work in close collaboration with the Department of Laboratory for Functional Morphology, University of Antwerp.

The MSc in Social Change provides insight into the causes and consequences of the unprecedented social, religious and political changes affecting contemporary societies. Students also undertake advanced training in empirical social science research methods, both qualitative and quantitative/statistical analysis.

ISC is an interdisciplinary social science research centre in the School of Social Sciences. Applications are invited for a 3 year PhD fellowship at the Department of Biomedicine, the University of Bergen. The position is attached to the project ”Arc and the molecular control of LTP consolidation in vivo”, financed by the Research Council of Norway.

Major aims are to study cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity in the rat brain. The work combines in vivo electrophysiological recording of long-term potentiation (LTP) with pharmacological and genetic manipulations of the immediately early gene, Arc. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in electrophysiology, imaging, and molecular neuroscience.

Qualifications

The fellowships memorialise famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing aerospace-related sciences and aerospace engineering. There have been 1,262 Amelia Earhart Fellowships totaling over US$7 million awarded to 880 fellows worldwide. It is anticipated that 35 grants will be made for the 2010 academic year.

Eligibility

Fully Funded PhD Studentship in English Literature and Medical Humanities, Durham University

A fully funded three-year doctoral studentship (funded by the Wellcome Trust) is available to work with Professor Corinne Saunders and colleagues in the Department of English Studies and the Centre for Medical Humanities. Doctoral proposals are invited that span the disciplines of English Literature and Medical Humanities. Research may be focused on literature of any period, but should engage with the ways in which literature reflects on, represents, or is illuminated by, medicine. Topics might include, for example, the literary portrayal and function of aspects of medicine and illness, the history of medicine and its relationship with literature, psychoanalytic theory, or the connection between illness and creativity. Proposals should contribute to one or more of the broad themes below:

•the place of creativity in human flourishing and wellbeing
•practices and policies that aim to promote wellbeing and health, including arts based practices
•relations between flourishing, embodiment, wellbeing and health
•relations between the sciences, the arts and medical practice
•explorations of public engagement within medicine, arts and other forms of social policy with a view to enhancing wellbeing and health
•the role of creativity in health and wellbeing
•experience, medical knowledge and individuals

The award is part of a strategic grant in Medical Humanities made by the Wellcome Trust to Durham University and the successful candidate will have full affiliation and involvement in the research environment of the unique inter-disciplinary and cross-faculty Centre for Medical Humanities [http://www.dur.ac.uk/cmh/]. The Centre's work is funded by the Wellcome Trust and focused on an established collaborative research programme concerning the role of medical knowledge in human flourishing.

The research training and PhD registration will be through the Department of English Studies, a dynamic research and postgraduate environment. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 90% of the research activity in the Department was judged to be of international standing, in terms of its originality, significance and rigour, with 60% considered to be either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. KSKRA scholarships in 2010 Eligibility criteria:

Minimum educational qualification and experience:

1. For Engineers: Ph.D. in engineering (who presented his doctoral thesis may also apply) or Master of Engineering (M. Tech. / ME / MS) with a minimum stay of 2 years experience and RD after completing M. Tech. / Me / MS degree.

Synthesis and characterization of sulfonated hyperbranched poly(arylene oxindole) for hydrolysis of cellulose

Description: Acidic hydrolysis of cellulose is an attractive route to produce glucose in a sustainable way without direct competition with food supply. However, due to its crystalline structure, cellulose is highly resistant to hydrolysis, usually resulting in a slow process and many side products.
Highly branched polymers have numerous terminal groups which can easily be interconverted. They usually display a higher solubility than their linear counterparts and hence are excellent candidates for homogeneous catalysis if catalytic groups are introduced at the well exposed terminal groups on the hyperbranched polymer surface. Additionally, for the hydrolysis of cellulose, a good adsorption of the catalyst to the insoluble cellulose particles is likely to be crucial for efficient conversion.
Therefore, the hyperbranched poly(arylene oxindole)s recently developed in our group, are expected to have excellent characteristics for the development of highly efficient cellulose hydrolysis catalysts. They are relatively easily synthesized, can readily be decorated with numerous catalytically active terminal groups (such as sulfonic acid groups) and can additionally be functionalized with chemical groups specially intended to improve the adsorption to the cellulose particles. Moreover, they are perfectly stable under the expected reaction conditions (pH = ~0, ~150 °C).
The synthesis is accomplished by acid catalyzed polycondensation of A3 monomer and commercially available isatin as the B2 monomer. The polymer thus obtained will be sulfonated, resulting in a tuneable number of sulfonic acid groups. It is anticipated that the local concentration of sulfonic acid groups combined with the amide groups, which are able to bind to the cellulose via hydrogen bonding, will result in high hydrolytic acitivity, with minimal by-products formed due to the moderate acidity of the aromatic sulfonic acid groups and the buffer effect of the amide groups.
Crucial molecular characteristics will be varied in order to evaluate their effect on the catalytic activity, such as the molar mass and the number of sulfonic acid groups present. Moreover, linear analogues will be prepared and evaluated in order to assess the influence of the densely branched topology. Analogues containing additional amide groups will be synthesized using triamide as the A3 monomer. This will provide insight in the anticipated role of the amide groups as adsorbing entities. Finally, These hyperbranched molecules can readily be crosslinked, resulting in insoluble network particles. The catalytic activity of the latter will be evaluated as well, as they allow easy removal from the reaction mixture and hence facilitate the recycling of the catalyst.
